How does the process work? * The Core Teams receives a referral * Data is collected * The intervention process begins * Referrals are made to specialized professionals is necessary * Follow-up support is given
Any concerned individual (faculty, staff, parents, or others) can refer a student due to concern for their welfare. Referrals are usually written and are always kept confidential. Only the Core Team has access to the referral files. Once a referral has been reviewed and accepted by the Core Team, a case manager is assigned from among the Core Team members to oversee the progress of the referral.
Are the referred students part of the process? Yes! Students are included in all phases of the intervention. Together, team members, the student, and often the parents, make a plan to begin to address the problem. Plans may include: adult mentors, behavior contracts, joining a skills or information small group, seeing an outside counselor or other resource person.
Must students and families take part in this process? No! No student or family is forced to participate. If a student is unwilling to use the offered assistance at this time, the door is left open and the student is monitored through periodic collection of data. If the problem worsens, it is documented and additional suggestions may be made by the Core Team for later assistance.
What is included in follow-up support? The Core Team monitors the student's progress to ensure she/he is still receiving the necessary school and/or community support to work through the problem. Collaboration of efforts is the key to seeing that all students receive the total amount of assistance they need to continue being successful.
Other Services: On an as needed basis, the student assistance program has provided groups for students coping with divorce or death, having problems with anger management or social skills, or being new to the school at the beginning of the school year. If your child is having difficulty with any of these issues, please contact a Core Team member for more information.
