District Philosophy
Farmingdale Elementary School assumes the obligation to provide appropriate educational experiences for the academically gifted students. The primary function of the Discovery program is to identify and develop the special talent of those students through enrichment, acceleration, and special curricula. Students who are shown to be exceptional in specific areas are identified for the Discovery Program.
District Definition for Inclusion in the Discovery Program
Realizing that some students have academic needs that are different from their age peers, Farmingdale Elementary School shall define academically talented students in grades K-4 to be those students who excel or have the potential to excel in the areas of general intellectual ability and specific academic aptitude. These students require accelerated and enriched learning experiences beyond those provided in the regular curriculum. Inclusion in the Discovery program at Farmingdale Elementary School is subject to ongoing evaluation relative to the individual's needs and academic growth.
Identification
The identification process involving multiple criteria encompasses the two processes of screening and selection. Objective measures and professional recommendations will be used in the selection of the academically talented students.
